Ludwig Karl von Segesser, MD, FETCS, FACS, FESC Originates from Luzern, Switzerland, where he went through primary school and gymnasium. He followed medical school at the University of Basel Switzerland, and graduated prior to training in general surgery (Diplomat Swiss board of Surgery). Cardiovascular surgery training in Geneva, Houston, TX, and Zurich, Switzerland prior to an academic appointment at Zurich University Hospital.

Nomination as full clinical professor and Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, University Hospital Vaudois, CHUV, Lausanne, Switzerland in 1995. L. K. von Segesser has a longstanding interest for research in cardiopulmonary bypass, modification of blood exposed synthetic surfaces, and mechanical circulatory support, as well as paediatric and adult cardio-vascular surgery. He has published over 500 articles, is member of more than thirty scientific societies, and ten editorial boards including Editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Cardio-thoracic Surgery and Founding editor of Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
He is president of the Swiss Heart Foundation since 2004 and has also contributed for many years to humanitarian projects in the field of congenital heart disease in Switzerland and abroad.
